Aliasing

Aliasing makes different analogue frequencies indistinguishable after sampling. Unwanted signals may then appear inside the digital range of interest.

A concrete example

A 30 kHz tone appears as 18 kHz when sampled at 48 kS/s with real samples unless sufficiently filtered first.

What to keep in mind

A subsequent digital filter cannot uniquely separate signals that have already folded onto each other.
