Gain

Gain describes the ratio of output to input level. In a receiver it can occur before or after digitisation and is often expressed in dB.

Also found under: Gain · Verstärkung · RF Gain

A concrete example

More input gain can make a weak signal more usable while the converter remains below overload.

What to keep in mind

Louder audio or a brighter waterfall does not automatically mean a better signal-to-noise ratio.
