Icom ID-52E PLUS: set up D-STAR

From your callsign through FROM and TO to a local repeater conversation, then a gateway connection.

You need your assigned callsign and current information for the chosen D-STAR repeater: output, input/offset, module and any gateway. Check its registration requirements for gateway use. This guide does not prescribe repeater frequencies.

Checks apply to this page visit. They record your own verification and do not automatically test a radio.

  1. 01

    Save your starting point

Save the existing settings to microSD or with the matching CS-52PLUS software. Note the firmware version. Create a separate memory for the exercise so your established channels remain available.

    How to verify this step

The backup is identifiable and belongs to this radio.

  2. 02

    Enter your own callsign

Open My Station → My Call Sign and enter your own callsign. Select it as MY. For network operation it must match your gateway registration. The callsign on this website is not a value to copy to someone else’s radio.

    How to verify this step

The active MY field shows your callsign without a typo.

  3. 03

    Open DR and choose FROM

Enter the DR function. Under FROM, choose the accessible repeater from the Repeater List. Compare the entry with its operator’s information. An old list may contain an outdated offset or module.

    How to verify this step

FROM, receive frequency and transmit offset refer to the same verified repeater.

  4. 04

    Start locally

Under TO, choose Local CQ. Listen first. On a clear channel, call with your callsign and ask for a short report. A network path is not required for this initial local test.

    How to verify this step

Another station confirms receiving you. Your own display alone does not establish a QSO.

  5. 05

    Add the gateway path

For a network connection, choose the intended destination in TO. FROM remains your local access point. Check UR, R1 and R2: destination, access repeater with module, and gateway must form a coherent route. Use the operator’s documented destination/reflector selection; do not guess module letters or linking commands.

    How to verify this step

Local reception already works; another station now confirms the intended network path.

  6. 06

    Record the working path

Save the verified access with a clear name. Record separately what worked locally and over the network. You can log an actual conversation in Wavelog; a repeater acknowledgement or gateway login is not a conversation.

    How to verify this step

You can recall the memory and explain the connection path.

If it does not work yet.

I hear the repeater but cannot reach it.

Check TX frequency/offset, DV mode, MY and selected module, then antenna and local coverage. Receiving the output does not prove your transmission reaches the repeater input.

Local calls work; gateway calls do not.

Compare registration and spelling of MY, the gateway in FROM and the TO destination. Keep the known local memory so you do not change a working RF path at the same time.
