WHAT YOU WILL LEARN
  • Explain the stages of a digital connection.
  • Understand a hotspot’s role.
01

Digital is not a single mode

Digital voice Sample rateSample rate is the number of samples digitised per second. Together with filtering and the sampling method, it limits the usable frequency range.Example & full explanation → and encodes speech, then sends data across a modulated RF link. The receiver must support both the radio protocol and voice coding. D-STARD-STAR is an amateur-radio system for digital voice and data. DV operation uses callsign fields and a selected destination; a gateway can connect repeaters to the network.Example & full explanation → and DMR are different systems, so tuning two radios to the same frequency does not make them compatible.

Digital radio still depends on antennas, signal level, interference and propagation. Error correction can reconstruct some damaged data. Beyond its limits, dropouts or unintelligible fragments can appear. Clear audio until shortly before failure therefore does not mean the RF link has unlimited margin.

Direct, repeater or hotspot

In direct operation, the RF link connects radios directly. A RepeaterA repeater receives signals and retransmits them. Many voice repeaters use different input and output frequencies; other stations are heard on the repeater output.Example & full explanation → receives and retransmits and may also connect to a data network. A personal HotspotA digital-radio hotspot connects a local radio access point to a digital network. Its modem, software and network configuration determine supported modes and features.Example & full explanation → typically provides a short local RF link and access to a digital network. It does not automatically improve your antenna’s range.

MMDVM is a modem platform; MMDVMHost handles connections for supported modes. Actual capabilities depend on hardware, firmware and configuration. Connecting to a multimode hotspot does not automatically turn a DMR-only handheld into a D-STAR radio.

Check a connection in stages

Check the radio and local RF link first, the selected network second, and the conversation destination last. Record frequency, mode and network-specific parameters separately. Successful internet login does not prove the RF link works; receiving a local transmission does not prove correct network routing. Separating these stages makes troubleshooting manageable.

Got the idea?

Your hotspot is logged into its network but cannot receive your handheld. Where do you start?

Show answer & explanation

At the local RF link: check mode, transmit/receive frequencies and device settings. Network login alone does not verify this part.
