A channel has several layers

In common Tier II RepeaterA repeater receives signals and retransmits them. Many voice repeaters use different input and output frequencies; other stations are heard on the repeater output.Example & full explanation → operation, DMRDigital Mobile Radio is a family of digital radio standards. Amateur radio commonly uses DMR Tier II; channel configuration includes frequency, colour code, time slot and call destination.Example & full explanation → uses two timeslots within a 12.5 kHz channel. This allows two time-separated communication paths. The timeslot belongs to the radio access, while a talkgroup identifies a logical conversation group; it is neither a frequency nor an extra physical channel.

The Colour codeA colour code is a DMR identifier from 0 to 15. For normal operation, the channel must match the repeater or hotspot’s colour code.Example & full explanation → distinguishes access on the same frequency and must match the system being used. It does not provide encryption. A DMR ID identifies a participant but does not replace the other channel settings. A correct name or valid ID cannot compensate for the wrong Time slotDMR TDMA divides a 12.5 kHz radio channel into two time slots. A suitably operated repeater can provide two separate call paths.Example & full explanation →.

  1. Frequency: selects the RF channel.
  2. Timeslot: selects one of the time-separated paths.
  3. Colour code and talkgroup serve different purposes; the talkgroup is the logical call destination.
Quick check

Does TS2 create a second carrier frequency?

Reveal explanation

No. The paths share the channel in time. A simplex hotspot does not automatically support the two independent paths of a duplex repeater; its configuration matters.

What comes together in a codeplug

A CodeplugA codeplug is a radio’s programmable configuration, including channels, contacts and zones. It is edited with programming software compatible with the hardware.Example & full explanation → contains channels, contacts and zones, among other settings. A channel combines frequencies, mode, colour code, timeslot and the selected call destination. A zone groups channels for operation. Receive groups and filters determine which group calls are heard, depending on the radio. Check the manual because manufacturers implement these concepts differently.

Start with one understandable channel using the information from the relevant repeater or HotspotA digital-radio hotspot connects a local radio access point to a digital network. Its modem, software and network configuration determine supported modes and features.Example & full explanation → operator. Check local reception before adding more groups and zones. Back up a working version. A large imported channel list is hard to diagnose when frequencies, networks or destinations have since changed.

Network behaviour belongs to the chosen access

Whether a TalkgroupA talkgroup is a numbered group destination for digital calls. A DMR channel typically selects it as a digital group contact.Example & full explanation → is forwarded continuously or only after activation depends on the network and its configuration. Leave conversation pauses so other participants and control functions can get through. Change only one layer at a time when troubleshooting, and check the operator’s current information instead of assuming a generic number list applies everywhere.

Got the idea?

Two channels have the same frequency and talkgroup but different timeslots. Are they equivalent?

Show answer & explanation

No. Timeslot and forwarding must match the chosen access. The talkgroup alone does not determine the RF path.
